     <mods:abstract>This dissertation studies Arturo Pérez-Reverte's literary work in relation to Spanish canonical writers Benito Pérez Galdós and Miguel de Unamuno. It explores how Pérez-Reverte's
      social critique of contemporary Spain both mirrors and rewrites Galdós' view of Spanish politics and society in the "Episodios nacionales". It also examines Pérez-Reverte's ?bestsellers' in the
      light of Unamuno's existential metafiction to show how the latter's literary thought has contributed to and is reshaped by postmodernity. The first chapter ("Los nuevos ?Episodios nacionales' ")
      analyzes Pérez-Reverte's historical novels ("El maestro de esgrima", "El húsar", "Cabo Trafalgar" and "Un día de cólera") in connection with Galdós' "Prim", "La de los tristes destinos",
      "Bailén", "Trafalgar" and "El 19 de marzo y el 2 de mayo". This comparative study reveals that Pérez-Reverte revisits the Episodios by adding new narrative perspectives that expand Galdos
      accounts of history. "Chapter 2" examines how the crisis of authorship in "Niebla" and "San Manuel Bueno, mártir" is reconceptualized in "La piel del tambor", "El club Dumas" and "El pintor de
      batallas" in terms of intertextuality, discursive hybridism, chaos theories, and the redefinition of reading as rewriting, the latter forming the basis of "Chapter3". The last part of the
      dissertation explores how Pérez-Reverte's ?bestsellers' use the metaphor of painting to develop a subtle metafictional theory of reading that, as in the case of much of contemporary literature,
      finds its roots in the reader's critical role in Unamuno's "Cómo se hace una novela" and "La novela de don Sandalio, jugador de ajedrez". The "Conclusions" include a summary of two future
      research projects on Pérez-Reverte and his review of the literary canon: Pérez-Reverte as a transatlantic reader and Pérez-Reverte and the so-called "Generation of 98".</mods:abstract>
