Note
Over eight thousand laborers were brought under contract from the northern provinces of Spain, chiefly from Galicia, and hence were called Gallegros. They were hardy, vigorous men, and were the most efficient members of the working force. Like the Italians, they were provided with food similar to that which they had been accustomed to at home.

On Fourth of July each year an elaborate programme of exercises and sports was arranged, including an athletic meet in which there were contests of various kinds for prices. The photograph was taken on July 4, 1912, when the meet was in the baseball park at Ancon, near the Hotel Tivoli.
