Abstract
Our daily experience can be thought of as a sequence of acquiring perceptual input to make decisions, then planning and executing appropriate actions. Hence, examining the influence of perception on action flows logically. Investigating the inverse may seem unusual; however, in a series of studies, we have consistently found reciprocal links between perception, cognition, and action. First, we reported that simultaneous easy-action preparation or even prior action training enhanced early visual processing. In addition, we showed that improvement of motor timing enhances the sensitivity of time perception, even for timing patterns inherent to a more complex motor task. We interpret these findings that there is a shared temporal mechanism between perception and movement regardless of rhythmicity or complexity of the motor tasks. Furthermore, we discovered the reciprocal facilitation between visuomotor rotation and mental rotation, suggesting that a common operation of rotation can lead to a bidirectional transfer between action and visual cognition tasks. In summary, our works provide strong evidence to support a close interplay between perception, cognition, and action. It highlights the necessity of an integrated approach to understanding adaptive behavior in a complex environment, which would allow us to investigate a range of broader questions that cannot be resolved by studying the perceptual or motor system alone.
