Views of Carthage from Rome: Polybius and Livy on Hannibal in the Age of Imperial GrowthThis thesis explores the portrayal of Carthage through the lens of Hannibal in the works of Polybius and Livy. First, this thesis explores Hannibal in The Histories of Polybius, the first major extant historian with an extensive interest in Carthage and Hannibal. Through exploring Polybius’ connection to Hannibal and Polybius’ overall historical method, this first chapter contextualizes the nuances behind the positive and negative traits Polybius associates with Hannibal, including Hannibal’s skill, composure, and rage. The second chapter examines Livy, whose work, Ab Urbe Condita, incorporates Carthage and Hannibal within a long-term history of Rome. Like the first chapter, the discussion on Livy begins with the impact of Livy’s understanding of Hannibal and Livy’s approach to writing history. From there, the chapter explored Livy’s sometimes-biased depiction of Hannibal by examining the traits of charisma, cruelitas, and perfidia that Livy ascribes to Hannibal. Finally, this thesis compares and contrasts similar elements in Polybius’ and Livy’s works to synthesize the two authors’ collective representation of Hannibal. Elements like the use of speeches in both works, the authors’ respective military backgrounds, and Hannibal’s tragic portrayal compared to other figures in Polybius' and Livy's works, allowed this thesis to conclude that both authors ultimately saw Hannibal as an example whom readers should study.Qiao, HoracecreatorOliver, Grahamthesis advisorBrown University.
