Description
- Abstract:
- During his stay in the USA between 1812 and 1820, the scientific merits of Abbot José Correia da Serra in various fields of knowledge were fully acknowledged. His American friends, especially Thomas Jefferson, saw in his enlightened mind the virtues of a true encyclopedic spirit. What was the origin, in what context was his thought formed? This is the main motivation behind this text, in which I try to present and discuss Correia da Serra’s learning process during his youth, when he stayed in Italy, between Rome and Naples, and during his stay in Portugal, his native country, having been one of the founders and most active members of the Academy of Sciences of Lisbon.
