Este artigo analisa a reformulação pessoana do mito do Quinto Império em Mensagem, colo-cando-a em diálogo com o discurso profético e messiânico de António Vieira. Em vez de ler a obra de Pessoa como simples continuidade ou confirmação de um nacionalismo místico, propõe-se empreender uma abordagem crítica que entende Mensagem como um espaço poético de reelaboração simbólica da História, do mito e da memória cultural portuguesa. A análise sublinha as tensões entre nacionalismo e universalismo, crença e distanciamento crítico, profecia e construção poética, mostrando como Pessoa transforma os motivos messiânicos herdados num projeto especulativo, fragmentário e essencialmente inconcluso. Ao revisitar conceitos como o Encoberto, o Quinto Império e a figura do poeta-profeta, o estudo sustenta que Mensagem não oferece uma síntese redentora da identidade portuguesa, mas antes dramatiza a sua instabilidade, apresentando o mito como expectativa e horizonte suspenso, e não como doutrina ou programa histórico.

Abstract (lang="eng")

This article examines Fernando Pessoa’s reconfiguration of the myth of the Fifth Empire in Mensagem, placing it in dialogue with António Vieira’s prophetic and messianic discourse. Rather than treating Pessoa’s work as the direct continuation or fulfilment of a national-mystical ideology, the study approaches Mensagem as a poetic space where historical memory, myth and symbolic language are reworked under the conditions of modernity. The analysis foregrounds the tension between nationalism and universalism, belief and scepticism, prophecy and poetic construction, highlighting how Pessoa transforms inherited messianic motifs into a speculative, symbolic and fundamentally unstable project. By reassessing key notions such as the Encoberto, the Fifth Empire and the prophetic function of the poet, the article argues that Mensagem does not resolve the contradictions of Portuguese history or identity, but rather exposes them, staging the myth as expectation, suspension and unfinished horizon rather than as doctrine or programme.
