   <mods:abstract>TRPV1 is a heat- and capsaicin-activated receptor expressed on C-fibers,
      nociceptors that carry pain information from the periphery to the brain. Channelrhodopsin 2
      (ChR2) is a blue light-activated ion channel not normally expressed in animals. In mice
      genetically engineered to express ChR2 in Trpv1-expressing C fiber afferents, blue light
      stimulation of the paw activates these pain fibers, mimicking a painful
      stimulus.</mods:abstract>
