Abstract
A lighter (small barge) heads toward an imposing steamship. Note the rounded bow of the steamship. The shape of the bow was thought to push apart water with a thinner stern to let water pass behind the vessel more quickly, and was a standard shape for all large ships, until American naval architect John Griffith's 1845 breakthrough, The Rainbow, featuring a pointed bow and sleeker hull.
