<mods:abstract>We present the effects of patient baseline characteristics such as Body Mass Index
(BMI) on Mindfulness-based treatment outcomes. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is a
therapeutic intervention designed to treat relapsing depression. It is known to affect
functional connectivity among brain regions and neuro-hormonal pathways involved in chronic
depression. Many patient who are undergoing MBCT are also struggling with weight and
nutritional issues that may affect the same brain regions and hormonal pathways affected by
MBCT. Data is limited on how baseline patient factors such as Body Mass Index (BMI) affect a
patient's ability to benefit from mindfulness based interventions. This study randomized
patients with recurrent depression to two groups, one receiving and 8 week MBCT intervention
and one on a wait list. Measures were taken before and after MBCT that included EEG sleep
analysis, lab assessments that included neuro-psychological battery tests, and treatment
questionnaires. The study found that high BMI correlated with no benefit or worsening
depression pre to post MBCT intervention and that the effects of BMI were gender specific.
Understanding how patient baseline factors affect MBCT treatment outcomes will lead towards
better targeted treatment approaches for specific patient populations.</mods:abstract>
