- Ruth Bains Hartmann discusses growing up in Providence, her family, and her
educational background. She proceeds to describe the academic atmosphere of Pembroke College;
extracurricular activities, including Sock and Buskin and the Pembroke Dramatic Society; and
Pembroke's institutional individuality, which influenced her to oppose the 1971 merger of
Brown and Pembroke. Upon her wartime graduation, Ruth moved to Washington to work in the
Office of Strategic Services, which recruited English majors to work on cracking codes. The
independence of her life in Washington contrasted with her time at Pembroke, which was fairly
regulated, but, she explains, "city girls" had their unique community. She describes
Pembroke's campus and its various traditions in detail. In Part 2, Ruth discusses her
subsequent career in publishing and freelance writing, her husband, photographer Erich
Hartmann, and her support of his work and his archive.

- Ruth Bains Hartmann
was born in Providence, Rhode Island. At 15, she graduated from Pawtucket High School and
entered Pembroke College, where she studied English and became heavily involved in Sock and
Buskin and the Pembroke Dramatic Society. She was elected to the Rhode Island chapter of Phi
Beta Kappa and was on the Dean's list.
