Upon her wartime graduation, Ruth moved to Washington to work in the Office of Strategic Services, which recruited English majors to work on cracking codes. The independence of her life in Washington contrasted with her time at Pembroke, which was fairly regulated, but, she explains, "city girls" had their unique community. She describes Pembroke's campus and its various traditions in detail. In Part 2, Ruth discusses her subsequent career in publishing and freelance writing, her husband, photographer Erich Hartmann, and her support of his work and his archive. 1943 Ruth Bains Hartmann was born in Providence, Rhode Island.
