Triage provides a systematic method to properly distribute healthcare resources in a timely manner, which is especially important in critical care in resource poor settings. In recent years, many guidelines have been developed with the goal of assisting ED staff in their triage decisions. Most notably, the modified Early Warning Score (mEWS) is a triage instrument that promises to predict patient disposition and clinical outcome in EDs, including predictive values for hospital admission, cardiac arrest, and death.
