Abstract
University Hall, on the Brown University campus, was built in 1770 and was the first building of the College. It was originally called the "College Edifice". In 1776 it served as barracks for American troops and a hospital for French soldiers. The stucco that was placed on the building in 1834, was removed during renovations in 1905. University Hall was designated a National Historic Landmark on May 5, 1963.
