    <mods:abstract>Appleton begins the interview recalling the defining decision made by Pembroke Dean Lida Shaw King to abolish all sororities on campus. She then describes the required five days a week of Chapel, her experience on the Pembroke tennis team, and the tradition and excitement of campus dances and Ivy Day. She tells the story of her decision to return to Brown for a masters doctorate degree—her theses on the topic of the relations between “the corporate colony of Rhode Island and the British Crown.” Initially hesitant and not without misgivings, she went on to teach at the Lincoln School, a profession she came to thoroughly enjoy. She closes the interview with the stories of her siblings, each choosing a different path in life, her three brothers going into medicine, law, and engineering</mods:abstract>

    <mods:note type="biographical/historical" displayLabel="Biographical note">Marguerite Appleton, Pembroke class of 1914, was one of six children of Brown chemistry professor John Howard Appleton, each graduating from Pembroke/Brown. She received both a masters and doctorate degree in history from Brown and then went on to teach English at the Lincoln School, where she was heavily involved in the beginnings of the Girl Scouts.</mods:note>
