<mods:abstract>Obesity and depression are frequently co-morbid disorders that according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are among the leading challenges in public health. A Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 30 is defined as obesity. Obesity is known to be associated with a more severe course of depression and a slower clinical response to pharmacological and anti-depressant treatment. However, little is known about the relationship between BMI and clinical response to behavioral interventions like Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) for psychiatric disorders. The purpose of this study was to characterize the relationship between patient baseline BMI and clinical response to an 8-week MBCT intervention. A secondary aim was to examine the social, physiological and psychological factors that may mediate this relationship.</mods:abstract>
