   <mods:abstract>How do health care providers perceive the role of birth doulas in maternity care? A doula is a trained community health worker who provides continuous informational, physical and emotional support for pregnant people (and their families) during pregnancy, labor and immediately postpartum. There is existing published data on the health benefits of doulas, especially for low-resource, high-need patients, yet there is great variation in physician, nurse and midwife willingness to engage with this model of care. Knowledge gaps remain with regard to how and why individual providers decide to utilize, relate to, or encourage this model of care. This study seeks to identify and characterize awareness, knowledge, and attitudes toward birth doulas among  maternity care providers in Rhode Island</mods:abstract>
