<mods:abstract>Fewer than 30% of new diagnoses for ovarian cancer are "early stage" (stages I and II) cancers. The standard of care for early stage ovarian cancers (EOCs) is oophorectomy with complete surgical staging (bilateral lymphadenectomy, peritoneal and pelvic washings, and omental sampling). Recent research has revealed wide variation in adherence with these standards, with <50% of women in one study receiving the indicated lymphadenectomy. Inadequate staging has significant treatment implications because Gynecology Oncology Group (GOG) studies have demonstrated a survival benefit in chemotherapy for high-risk EOCs (stage IC, stage II, and all grade III cancers) but not for lower-risk EOCs. </mods:abstract>
