<mods:abstract>While current antibiotic agents provide suitable and cost effective means of inhibiting bacterial infiltration of biomedical devices, they are slowly becoming obsolete as microbial species become more adapt at resisting their effects. Recently, a silver ion eluting novel metal polymer hybrid surface coating has been developed that shows profound antimicrobial capability. Through the use of a modified Thio Michler's Ketone assay, the high throughput detection of siver ions released from this delivery platform can be successfully measured. This silver eluting device was fabricated by doping 87% Titanium-Polydimethylsiloxane hybrids with varying concentrations of silver and coating glass microscope cover slips in order to eradicate HB 101 E. coli species. It was found that the doped devices were not only capable of preventing bacterial adherence as well as biofilm formation, but also capable of eradicating E. coli species in varying colony concentrations at a distance. These findings suggest that the elution of silver ions provides a bioactive ability capable of localized antimicrobial efficacy. This effect is profound in that, implantable percutaneous devices can now be made resistant to microbial infiltration without the use of systemic prophylactic antibiotics and thus inherently safer for implantation into human recipients, especially the immunologically compromized patient community.</mods:abstract>
