- Abstract
- Photograph of Lincoln from 1860, taken by Alexander Hesler. Published in New York Times Oct 18, 1936. Hesler sold negatives to a purchaser in Philadelphia who held them until 1933, when they were sold to another purchaser in St. Louis. The negatives were broken in transit, the owner entered a claim against the post office, the claim was settled, and recently to the writing of the article, the dead-letter office of the government presented them to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.
