<mods:abstract>Nanopores are sensors used to detect DNA and, more recently, filamentous viruses, by measuring electrical current across the nanopore. They have not been used to detect small, spherical viruses, despite how useful that could be. The problem with spherical viruses is that they move quickly and are difficult to detect. This project explores an improved approach to detecting spherical viruses. Using extended nanopores made by heating and pulling hollow silica capillaries, the passage of spherical particles through the capillaries is detected by measuring brief drops in electrical current across the nanopore when it is immersed in a conductive salt solution in an electric field.</mods:abstract>
