- In elderly surgical patients, multiple comorbidities and diminished functional and cognitive reserve lead to increased postoperative complications and readmission rates. Based on the need to improve surgical care of older adults and the proven success of geriatric and orthopaedic co-management of elderly hip fracture patients, an innovative partnership between colorectal surgery and geriatrics launched the Geriatric Surgery Co-management (GSC) program at The Miriam Hospital (TMH) in 2014. Beginning November 1, 2014, GSC has augmented usual care for patients 70 and older undergoing colorectal surgery. In the GSC program, the co-managing geriatrician completes a comprehensive geriatric assessment in the early post-operative period and endeavors to see the patient daily through discharge.
