<mods:abstract>Transthoracic Echocardiograms (TTEs) are frequently performed inappropriately as defined by the appropriate use criteria (AUC) jointly published by the American Heart Association (AHA) and American College of Cardiology (ACC)1-3. To characterize this problem, we developed a program to automatically analyze TTEs from an electronic health record system and categorize them based on the AUC guidelines. Using the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III (MIMIC-III) database4, 99% of the 30,320 TTEs were classified into one of six main AUC categories: general; acute; valve; cardiac structure; hypertension, heart failure, or cardiomyopathy (HTN, HF, CM); aorta; and adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Future development will incorporate additional clinical data in order to determine TTE appropriate use rates for entire health systems.</mods:abstract>
