- Abstract
- Making a reference to the Davenport Brothers, two spiritualists, who, among other things, performed dramatic escapes, and their poster advertising their show in London, the artist shows Presidents Lincoln and Davis as the "American Brothers", struggling against the confining bonds of debt and military stalemate. With the coming of winter in 1864, their two armies appeared bogged down in an endless siege around Petersburg and Richmond, with no end to hostilities in sight.
