          <mods:abstract>A sarcastic John Bull asks Union troops fleeing in haste from the Battle of Bull Run "Hullo, Brother Jonathan. Where are you running to?" Abandoning their weapons and equipment the Federal soldiers shout back "Just gwine to take Canada". This cartoon compresses the events of several months. During the weeks following the fall of Fort Sumter, many people thought it was still a localized insurrection and some northern newspapers called for an American invasion of Canada. </mods:abstract>
