Abstract
John Bull and his family are interrupted at their Christmas feast by the appearance of "Captain Jonathan," who has the long, lanky frame and exaggerated facial features of Abraham Lincoln. As the guests express their dismay, the visitor declares in dialect that he is just checking to "see if thar's any rebels he'arr." In the center is the British foreign minister, John Russell, as the indignant young heir, protesting the intrusion. Fatherly John Bull orders his son to "Look after the plate-basket", where the silverware is kept.
