- Abstract:
- This research focuses on understanding why there exists a large discrepancy in the STEM concentrator student body--specifically, the disproportionate amount of underrepresented minorities (URMs) who leave their intended STEM concentrations sometimes in favor of another STEM concentration, many times in favor of a non-STEM concentration. We analyze faculty and student interviews to understand the disconnect between the two and create an action plan for the University, departments, professors, and students to help increase the retention of students studying STEM, particularly URMs.
