- Abstract
- This project explores relationships among several datasets related to music, such as data about the top songs streamed through the digital music streaming service Spotify over a period of time and sales and airplay data from Billboard Charts. Questions involved exploring whether there are common factors that determine the popularity a song, such as how danceable it is as quantified by Spotifys algorithm, or whether the data from the sales, airplay, and streaming of a song can determine its ranking. The installation asks whether Artificial intelligence can look at these data to determine the beauty of a piece of music or the standard of beauty applied by the pubic. We communicate through our installation that there is little correlation among the factors we analyzed and the popularity of a song, and that the popularit of a song can be influenced by popular culture, such as the viral video internet and social media meme "Mannequin Challenge," which was accompanied by a specific song.
