Abstract
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of unintentional death and injury among children in the United States, with more than 5,000 annual pediatric and adolescent deaths. Correct use of vehicle safety restraints for children, especially those under the age of 13, has been found to reduce the risk of death by significant amounts. Despite these regulations and research, many parents and adolescent drivers are unfamiliar with the specific recommendations that would apply to the infant or child in their family. Large patient volume and significant patient and parent downtime predispose the emergency department to be an important place to provide education. This study sought to develop an interactive, digital platform in order to further investigate whether an individually-tailored, computerized intervention leads to better parent and patient education on and adherence to the proper use of car restraints as compared to standard-of-care discharge instructions. Upon predicted enrollment completion in 2018, data analysis will determine the efficacy of CIAS as an interactive, digital tool for education on car restraint safety, especially across patient populations with existing health disparities
