Abstract
The AMS anatomy curriculum currently relies on an iBook to describe the location of important structures and circulating TAs and instructors to facilitate identification and teach dissection techniques. However, with static text attempting to explain elaborate 3D interactions and a limiting TA to student ratio, the setup of the course leaves areas for improvement. The goal of this project is to enhance learning of anatomy content through formal instruction in dissection technique during the first lab period, and implement interactive 3D modeling software alongside the existing iBook. A manual of three essential lab techniques was designed, and second year students were used to provide hands on dissection training to first years at a ratio of one student per lab group. Complete Anatomy by 3D4Medical was used to design diagrams and quizzes relevant to the material in the iBook and was made available to students both inside and outside the lab space. Anonymous survey data measuring confidence and competence in dissection technique will be compared between MD'20 and MD'21 to assess the impact of the training on the anatomy experience as a whole. This comparison will hopefully show an increase in overall confidence and earlier onset of competence in dissection technique with an equitable shift in self-reported content learning and average exam grades between the two classes. Qualitative data will assess the usefulness of the interactive diagrams and identify areas for improvement or additional applications within the curriculum.
