    <mods:abstract>In collaboration with hospital staff, the researcher completed on-the-ground survey, interview, and observational research with St. Luke patients, family caregivers, and medical staff members from June to August 2016. This research study provides an initial assessment of participant needs, perspectives on various palliative care concepts, identified barriers to accessing care, and symptom management and illness trends in patients designated as needing palliative care. Specifically, this study includes patients within the end stages of illness, estimated to be within six months of end of life by medical staff members, and their family caregivers. Therefore, the collected data is only valid as a starting place for discussion regarding hospice, end of life palliative care, services at St. Luke Hospital.</mods:abstract>
