<mods:abstract>New York City's neighborhoods have radically changed over the past few decades. While the rezoning of neighborhoods like the Far West Side has led to the creation of new residential units where none previously existed, many neighborhoods have seen their residents forced out due to rising rent prices. This study seeks to determine if MetroCard fare data, released weekly, can help the New York City government predict the next neighborhoods that might experience mass displacement. If New York City could track potential areas of displacement, they could better understand the implications of policy decisions; for example, does their supporting a new park spur a significant increase in rent? For the purposes of this study, gentrification will be defined as the displacement of a socio-economic group of people by individuals and businesses that are of a wealthier economic status.</mods:abstract>
