The Meanings Made Through Black Artistry

Description

Abstract:
This project derives from the wide-ranging ambition to delve into the anatomy of the black presence at Brown, a presence that did not sprout until more than a century after the university's foundation. My work explores the black artistic expressive space known as the Rites and Reason Theatre and its mission to blossom the unspoken and remembered stories from the rich history, culture, and aesthetics present within the African American experience. This theatre and its artistry diminish a potential narrative of lost remembrance at Brown University. It takes part in the commitment to water the roots from which the tree of the African Diaspora sprouts.
