Abstract: general (displayLabel="Scope and Contents note"): Interview with activist and artist Brodie Arthur, who reflects on her African, Caribbean, and Irish heritage, life in Toxteth, and the enduring legacies of transatlantic slavery. Topics include Liverpool’s role in the slave trade, systemic racism, community resistance, and the power of art and creativity as tools of survival and expression. Note: biographical/historical (displayLabel="Biographical/historical note"): Brodie Arthur is Liverpool born of African, Irish, and Jamaican heritage. Brodie’s passions and skills are plentiful, ranging from writing, acting, producing and has been strongly involved in activism and community engagement. Brodie is experienced in play-writing, co-production and race equality. She is guided by her passion for storytelling, social change, and community empowerment. As a performer, she has taken lead roles in acclaimed productions including She’s Leaving Home and Knocking On (co-created with Keith Saha and 20 Stories High). Her first independent theatre work, Family Healing (Unity Theatre, 2022), established her as a writer-director exploring healing and identity. She was published by Bloomsbury in A Letter to My White Best Friend North, contributing to vital conversations on race, identity, and social justice. Her community work includes co-leading the Bubble Up Commission (2023) on mental health for young people, and The World Reimagined (2022), exploring the legacies of the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Currently she works as the Outreach Engagement Officer at the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority for the Race Equality Hub.
