- Benjamin F. Butler was an American politician and lawyer who represented Massachusetts in the United States House of Representatives and later served as governor of Massachusetts. During the Civil War, he was regarded as an ineffectual leader and was widely reviled by Southern whites who gave him the nickname "Beast Butler"
