- The 32 text illustrations accompanying Staden's narrative have been printed from the original Marburg 1557 woodblocks which were rediscovered by Winckelmann (in two instances on p. 168 and 179, names present on the original woodcuts have been eliminiated). Two additional text illustrations (p. 18 and 74) are definitely not from Staden's original work; their source, consequently, remains unknown, notwithstanding Winckelmann's claim (p. 136) that all 34 woodcuts had been made at the instigation of Hans Staden.
