Because of their ability to move about the genome, TEs are a significant source of genomic damage. Their reactivation and mobilization can cause insertional mutagenesis, double strand DNA breaks, and even apoptosis. Thankfully, host genomes have evolved multiple suppressive molecular mechanisms to silence TEs. These include RNA interference (RNAi) pathways such as the short interfering RNA (siRNA) and Piwi-interacting RNA (piRNA) pathways as well as the establishment of repressive heterochromatin. Loss of these repressive mechanisms results in TE reactivation, genomic damage, cellular dysfunction, and compromised tissue function. This thesis examines the role of these repressive mechanisms in maintaining TE silencing in somatic tissues and the impact of their loss on organismal physiology and lifespan.</mods:abstract><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01024734"><mods:topic>Molecular biology</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01017473"><mods:topic>Metabolism</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/00999374"><mods:topic>Lipids--Metabolism</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/00898408"><mods:topic>Drosophila melanogaster</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01155415"><mods:topic>Transposons</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01121445"><mods:topic>Small interfering RNA</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01741020"><mods:topic>Non-coding RNA</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/00796650"><mods:topic>Adipose tissues</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject><mods:topic>fat body</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01922178"><mods:topic>RNA interference</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject><mods:topic>RNAi</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject authority="fast" authorityURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast" valueURI="http://id.worldcat.org/fast/01200830"><mods:topic>Piwi genes</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:subject><mods:topic>piwi</mods:topic></mods:subject><mods:language><mods:languageTerm authority="iso639-2b">English</mods:languageTerm></mods:language><mods:recordInfo><mods:recordContentSource authority="marcorg">RPB</mods:recordContentSource><mods:recordCreationDate encoding="iso8601">20170616</mods:recordCreationDate></mods:recordInfo><mods:identifier type="doi">10.7301/Z0X065HH</mods:identifier><mods:accessCondition type="rights statement" xlink:href="http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/">In Copyright</mods:accessCondition><mods:accessCondition type="restriction on access">Collection is open for research.</mods:accessCondition><mods:typeOfResource authority="primo">dissertations</mods:typeOfResource></mods:mods>
