Abstract
The purposes of the current research are to describe adolescents’ reported emotions prior to unused sexual opportunities and to explore associations with relevant factors and demographics. Youth were at-risk seventh grade students, aged 12-14 years, referred by school staff for having emotional and behavioral problems or suspected substance use/sexual activity. Data analyzed were baseline assessments completed through audio computer-assisted self-interviews, measuring factors related to demographics, sexual activity, and emotions prior to their last unused sexual opportunity. Youth in this study endorsed both positive and negative emotions, and significant differences in emotional endorsement emerged by sexual experience status and gender. Regression analyses revealed that positive emotions were associated with intentions to have sex in the next six months in the total sample, and marginally associated among sexually inexperienced adolescents. This study adds to the limited literature about adolescent sexual possibility situations and the influence of emotions.
