- Nos anos iniciais da Primeira Guerra Mundial, a vida política portuguesa esteve centrada na dramática opção entre a intervenção militar ao lado dos Aliados e a neutralidade. O debate repercutiu-se nos meios intelectuais, dando azo a tomadas de posição públicas de vários escritores em apoio dos Aliados. Fernando Pessoa pretendeu suscitar polémica com um texto em que defendia a "solidariedade espiritual" com a Alemanha, que acabou por não publicar. Este artigo passa em revista as posições de Pessoa em confronto com as de João de Barros, Teixeira de Pascoaes, António Sérgio e outros destacados intelectuais.

- During the first years of the First World War, Portuguese political life was concentrated around the dramatic option between military intervention next to the Allied and neutrality. The debate had an effect on the intellectual life, resulting in the support several writers openly gave to the Allies. Fernando Pessoa tried to raise controversy with a text that defended a "spiritual solidarity" with Germany, which he ended up not publishing. This article goes through the positions of Pessoa confronted with those of João de Barros, Teixeira de Pascoaes, António Sérgio and other renown intellectuals.
