- Ao afirmar "A real man cannot be, with pleasure and profit, anything more than bilingual.", Fernando Pessoa enfatizou de forma evidente um dos traços que marcou inegavelmente toda a sua vida e obra. O presente ensaio visa reunir e comentar as principais reflexões que os biógrafos e os críticos pessoanos têm feito sobre o bilinguismo do poeta, não esquecendo igualmente o que o próprio Pessoa deixou escrito sobre esta questão. Com este trabalho pretende-se, acima de tudo, chamar a atenção para a importância da relação de Pessoa com a língua inglesa e com as literaturas inglesa e americana, assunto que merece ser investigado com mais atenção.

- By stating "A real man cannot be, with pleasure and profit, anything more than bilingual." Fernando Pessoa clearly emphasized one of the traits that undoubtedly marked all his life and work. This paper aims to gather and review the main reflections that biographers and critics of Pessoa made on his bilingualism. I will also take in consideration what Pessoa himself had written on this subject. The main contribution of this brief essay is to draw attention to the importance of the relationship of Pessoa with English language and English and American Literatures, a subject that deserves to be investigated more closely.
