Abstract
The incidence of sudden cardiac death increases 5 to 40–fold in humans over 65 years as compared to younger individuals. The mechanisms underlying this phenomena at the cellular and organ levels remain elusive. Thus, it is critical to discover novel pathways that will lead to triggers that initiate ventricular arrhythmias and the substrate that will maintain these arrhythmias and will thereby lead to sudden cardiac death (SCD). To that end, it is essential to use a large animal model that will enable us to investigate the mechanisms of SCD to better understand and eventually prevent SCD in humans.
