- In 1918, a soldier and adventurer added his name to a short list of American writers that included Herman Melville and Leonard Bacon who wrote a poem in honor of Luís Vaz de Camões. Kermit Roosevelt was the son of former US President Theodore Roosevelt. Kermit went on safari in Africa, explored the River of Doubt in Brazil, and fought first for the British and then the United States in World War I. His poem about Camões explores how the poet’s work accompanied him on several adventures and was a source of comfort in times of dire hardship. This article explores all aspects of the poem, from its history, editing, publication, and editorial criticism.

Kermit Roosevelt era filho do ex-presidente dos Estados Unidos Theodore Roosevelt. Ele fez um safári na África, explorou o Rio da Dúvida no Brasil e lutou primeiro pelos britânicos e depois pelos Estados Unidos na Primeira Guerra Mundial.
