This study examined electrophysiological responses to symptom provocation in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) using electroencephalography (EEG). The aim was to determine whether the Late Positive Potential (LPP), a neural marker of emotional processing, differs between neutral and symptom-provoking stimuli and between OCD and healthy control groups. Thirteen participants (nine with OCD, four controls) completed a computer-based provocation task with individualized stimuli. EEG was recorded using a 64-channel system, and LPP amplitude was measured at centroparietal electrodes within the 300–1000 ms post-stimulus interval. Mean amplitudes were compared across conditions and groups.
Provoking stimuli elicited significantly greater LPP amplitudes than neutral stimuli across all participants, indicating enhanced emotional processing. However, no significant differences were observed between OCD and control groups. Both groups showed similar within-condition effects. These findings suggest that the provocation paradigm reliably engages neural responses to emotionally salient stimuli but does not distinguish between groups in this sample. The absence of group differences may reflect limited statistical power. Future research with larger samples is needed to evaluate the potential of LPP as a biomarker of OCD.
