- There were four considerations that prompted the editors to organize this special issue of the e-Journal of Portuguese History. The first reason why we embarked on this project was the rapid growth of migration studies over the last decades and the work being done across the globe on migration and diasporas in areas of former Portuguese presence. This growing body of work forms part of a multidisciplinary field of research which has, since the 1990s, shifted its focus to the trans-national dimensions of migration and the social networks that underpin global interactions in the “age of migration.” Areas of former Portuguese presence in Africa offer a richly sourced continuum of migratory movements and the formation of diasporas in a wide variety of socio-historical contexts over a period of over five centuries. Hence, the time frame of the papers, ranges from the sixteenth century to the present.

- Foram quatro considerações que levaram os editores a organizar este número especial do e-Jornal de História Portuguesa. A primeira razão pela qual embarcamos neste projeto foi o rápido crescimento dos estudos de migração nas últimas décadas e o trabalho que está sendo feito em todo o mundo sobre migração e diásporas em áreas de antiga presença portuguesa. Este crescente corpo de trabalho faz parte de um campo de pesquisa multidisciplinar que, desde a década de 1990, mudou seu foco para as dimensões transnacionais da migração e as redes sociais que sustentam as interações globais na “era da migração”. Áreas da antiga presença portuguesa na África oferecem um continuum rico em fontes de movimentos migratórios e a formação de diásporas em uma ampla variedade de contextos sócio-históricos ao longo de um período de mais de cinco séculos. Assim, o período de tempo dos papéis, varia desde o século XVI até o presente.
