Abstract: general (displayLabel="Scope and Contents note"): In this interview, Evelicia Debra Simons, a longtime farmworker at Modderdrift in De Doorns, South Africa, reflects on generational labor under the Dop system, the emotional toll of her father’s alcoholism, and the exploitation faced by women workers, including threats, withheld pay, and retaliation for union activity. She describes her leadership during the 2012 farm workers’ strike, her commitment to worker dignity, and the personal cost of challenging systemic power, while affirming hope for a future where farm workers live with respect and security. Please be advised that this interview may contain stories of trauma, both personal and community-wide related to the legacies of racial slavery and colonialism. It is preserved to document the emotions and experiences of the individual interviewed. Some language in this transcript may be offensive.
