- This article examines the distinction and interplay between digital archives and digital scholarly editions within the framework of authorial philology. It argues that any critical edition must be conceived as a working hypothesis grounded in a rigorous theoretical approach, while the philologist’s task encompasses preservation, reconstruction, and interpretative modelling of authorial intention. In contrast to print culture—where editorial outcomes tended to privilege a single, stabilised text—the digital environment enables the coexistence of multiple representations, foregrounding documents and compositional processes alongside the edited work. Drawing on the case of Fernando Pessoa’s The Duke of Parma, the article explores key issues such as document visualisation, editorial mediation, and readership. It ultimately proposes an expanded model of the Digital Scholarly Edition as an interpretative ecosystem that integrates archival organisation, textual variation, and analytical tools, thus enhancing both the text and the philological process itself.

- Este artigo analisa a distinção e a articulação entre arquivo digital e edição digital no âmbito da filologia de autor. Defende-se que toda a edição crítica deve ser entendida como uma hipótese de trabalho sustentada por um enquadramento teórico rigoroso, cabendo ao filólogo preservar, reconstruir e interpretar a intenção autoral. Enquanto a cultura impressa privilegiava soluções editoriais fixas, o meio digital permite múltiplas formas de representação, valorizando tanto os documentos como o processo composicional. A partir do caso de O Duque de Parma, de Fernando Pessoa, discutem-se questões como a visualização dos documentos, o impacto editorial na leitura e a definição do público das edições digitais. Propõe-se, por fim, um modelo alargado de edição digital como ecossistema interpretativo, que integra arquivo, variantes textuais e ferramentas analíticas, ampliando o alcance do processo filológico.
