Caricature of Paris Invaded by Demolishers

Description

Abstract:
While Haussmann is often credited for the "charm" of Paris as we know it today, urbanization of the city depended on the demolition and destruction of many residential properties and traditional quarters. Haussmann's work was therefore the inspiration for a variety of satirical and political cartoons during the Second Empire, many of which personified Paris as feminine. Edmont Morin's caricature emphasizes the invasive and destructive nature of Haussmann's demolition team.
