- This lithograph was originally published in the December 18th issue of "Le Charivari," a prominent satirical journal of 19th century Paris that often featured Daumier's caricatures. As a political and satirical painter, sculptor, and caricaturist, Daumier's work was often viewed as controversial and censured by the state; in 1832 he was imprisoned for portraying Louis-Philippe as Gargantua. In 1835, in response to an assassination attempt on Louis-Philippe, the government demanded that artists seek approval prior to the publication of political satire in journals such as "Le Charivari." The lithograph featured here was originally printed with a caption underneath: "At last the sun will shine on my potted plant. . . I shall soon know if it is a rose or a gilly flower." By 1852, demolition of the Parisian streets and quarters under Napoléon III and Haussmann was subject to much public and artistic scrutiny, such as that portrayed here by Daumier.
