Assessing HIV testing history, interest, and HIV risk-taking among adult patients at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital A&EThe aim of this project was to assess HIV testing need and interest of the patient population in the emergency department (ED) of the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) in Belize City, Belize. Testing in emergency departments has been advocated for and used as a means of identifying those with undiagnosed HIV infection who might not be tested elsewhere and linking them to care. Patients admitted to the ED were randomly approached and if eligible, were asked to complete a standardized survey on a tablet computer by themselves. Questions asked included demographic characteristics, HIV positivity status, HIV testing history, risk-taking behaviors, and opinions and interest in HIV testing. The data establishes that there is a significant population of patients in the Emergency Department who would still benefit from HIV testing.
