- Abstract:
general
(displayLabel="Scope and Contents note")
- 1994-1995 marked the 125th year of theatre at Brown. John R. Lucas, Managing Director, and Nancy R. Dunbar, Chairperson, welcomed audiences to the season and to the newly opened Catherine Bryan Dill Center for the Performing Arts which included Leeds Theatre, a renovated Faunce House Theatre renamed Stuart Theatre, and Ashamu Dance Studio, a fully-equipped black box space. The concert continued the tradtion of inviting dance alumni to return and Jessica Lute's '88, co-director of Onsite Dance Company contributed "Tracks." Seydou Coulibaly, master dancer from Mali, choreographed "Bari," and guest choreographer, Annamaura Silverblatt curated three solos by undergraduate students. Dance Extension, directed by Julie Adams Strandberg, could be seen in Charles Weidman's "Lynchtown" from 1936 and in Milton Myers "Seasonal Fire." Myers was so impressed with the Brown dancers, that even though he had set "Seasonal Fire" on other companies, he chose to make his archival tape for Lincoln Center using this cast. Strandberg's producer's note discussed the importance of learning and performing masterpieces and understanding style, nuance, and context. The note also announced the establishment of The Dance Legacy Institute at Brown. The Institute would go through two name changes, first to American Dance Legacy Institute and later to American Dance Legacy Initiative (ADLI), and two homes, first in the theater department and later at the John Nicholas Brown Center for Public Humanities and Cultural Heritage. ADLI lives on through dance-based programming at the Brown University Library and off-campus through Dancing Legacy, an organization that invites anyone to engage with American dance as a cultural asset relevant to all. The student choreographers for this show were: Dana Chase, Joanne Clain, Eden Mendel, Ryna Villar, Julie Regan, Chris Elam. The alumni choreographer and the dances in which they performed for this show were: Jessica Lutes '88, "Tracks"
