- Abstract:
general
(displayLabel="Scope and Contents note")
- This concert, produced by Michelle Bach-Coulibaly introduced New Works/World Traditions (NW/WT) to Brown theatre audiences. The mission of NW/WT, co-directed by Bach-Coulibaly and Seydou Coulibaly, was to research, develop and perform new works that honor the traditions of Mande culture. Freshmen choreographers Ryan Smith, Courtney Rowe, and Jonathan Martin, choreographers of "Tryst," would later establish RCJ, a student run company, named for the initials of their first names, that they sustained throughout their years at Brown, developing new works and peforming in all concerts. Dance Extension, directed by Julie A. Strandberg, performed Donald McKayle's 1996 "Rainbow Etude" (based on "Rainbow 'Round My Shoulder, 1955) Ruth Andrien's 1989 "Flow Form," Danny Grossman's 1981 "Endangered Species," Eve Gentry's 1938 "Tenant of the Street," and Colin Connor's 1990 "Requiem." The lights did not come up between "Endangerd Species" and "Tenant of the Street." Images by Kathe Kolwitz were projected between the two pieces. Her work inspired Danny Grossman in his creation of "Endangered Species" and Eve Gentry in her creation of "Tenant of the Street." Dancers Jessica Gaynor, Wendy Rein, Andros Zins-Browne, James Brown, Jamal Jackson, Lauren Hale, and Ryan Smith went on to have distinguised careers in the dance field. Rein and Smith co-founded RAWDANCE, based in California. The program also announced that the Commencement Dance Concert on May 29th and 30th 1999 would be devoted to Annamaura Silverblatt's "Yitgdal," a tribute to the 6,000,000 Jews who died in the Holocaust, co-sponsored by the RI Holocaust Museum. This was an example of the dance program's commitment ot collaboration and community engagement. In her program note, producer Michelle Bach-Coulibaly's reminded us that May is National Dance Month in America and how fitting it is that the dance concert occurs in the spring - a seaon traditionally filled with festivals, merriment and rituals of "renewal release, and community healing."
